Welcome to Humanities 7!

I’m exited to get started!  Grade 7 is a very important year.  Students are moving to a new school and students are also moving from childhood to teenhood!  This is very exciting and can be very challenging at the same time!  I look forward to getting to know all of you.


Humanities 7: Ancient Egypt

We are going to be studying Ancient Egypt in February and the beginning of March.  We will be focusing on developing research skills:  note taking, creating paragraphs from notes, illustrating, and summarizing information.  Below are the stations students are working on.

Hum 8: Literature Circles

November 12th, 2015

Students are reading for the next few weeks in Humanities.  While reading, students are to complete assignments relating to their novels.  The assignments and due dates are listed below.

Section #1 – due Monday November 16th

  1.  Planning & Prediction
  2. Word Chart – find 8 challenging words, find their definitions, and write a good sentence (8+ words) for each.
  3. Questions – 16 questions total
  4. Literature Devices – four
  5. Response #1 – answer the question in one full page

Section #2 – due Monday November 23rd

  1. Group discussion about section 1
  2. Word Chart (if you did not receive an A on your first one)
  3. Quotes & Literary Devices (4 quotes & reasoning, 6 literary devices)
  4. Connections (text to self, text to text, and text to world)
  5. My Scene
  6. Response #2

Which event would you describe as a critical event?  How did that critical event trigger subsequent events?

Choose a passage that you liked, found interesting, odd, amazing, surprising, confusing (include page #).  Tell me about your thoughts.  Begin with….I wonder why… or  I’m having trouble understanding… or I’m surprised when…

After reading section 2, what theme(s) are developing in your novel?  Give evidence from the novel where these themes arise.

Section #3 – due Monday November 30th

  1. Group discussion for section 2
  2. Literary Devices (at least 4 different ones)
  3. Quotes (one to three quotes and insights)
  4. Response #3



Hum 7: Literature Circles

Students are starting to read one of the following novels:

Hatchet by Gary Paulsen

City of Ember by Jeanne DuPrau

Alabama Moon by Watt Key

Iqbal by Francesco D’Adamo

Because of Mr. Terupt by Rob Buyea

Also Known as Harper by Ann Haywood Leal

Students have divided their novels into four sections.  They will have one week to work on each section.


  1.  Planning & Prediction
  2. Word Chart – 8 words with definition and a good sentence for each.
  3. Questions – 4 questions in each section.
  4. Response #1 – answer the question in at least two paragraphs.

8.  Writing Criteria

Your assignments should be in your writing key tab.  Assignments are DRAFTS, not polished work.

Choose TWO of the previous assignments to polish up.  Rewrite them on your google drive and share them with me.  Your key tab will be collected on TUESDAY OCTOBER 27th.  Your two good copies on google drive will be marked on Tuesday and/or Wednesday (October 27/28th).
