Technology is all about solving problems in the real world or meeting a need. A
Technologist will use engineering principles to design and construct products or systems that solve problems or meet needs. These engineering principles can be anything from electronics and computer control to pneumatics and mechanisms. Designing for people is what Technology is all about!
In Technology, we try to promote self-confidence, develop decision making skills, strive for excellence and learn how to work independently.
Facilities
There is one lab and one workshop equipped with sanders, pedestal drills, a horizontal planer, a table saw, a Printed Circuit Board production unit, a vacuum former and welding equipment. Most hand tools have been provided for each student.
Safety is paramount and each machine has a work area and safety equipment placed alongside. Students must wear all safety equipment when in workshops and are constantly made aware of this.
The lab area is also provided with modern facilities. Side benches are provided with many 110V sockets and pneumatic outlets. All rooms are equipped with PCs and colour inkjet printers – used mostly for word processing, graphics, programming and computer aided design. We have, at present, 14 PCs which are used for research purposes and computer aided design. These are all networked to laser printers, plotters and colour inkjets around the school. We have VectorWorks, Microsoft Office, Crocodile Clips and Bridge Designer installed on all machines and 3DS MAX installed on one machine.
In addition, we have built up a good range of texts, magazines and catalogues which the students use for research and evaluation purposes – a necessary part of the coursework.
Students are taught how to use desk top publishing and graphical software in a meaningful exercise and shown how manufacturing processes such as PCB layout can be greatly facilitated using appropriate software.
